How We Ship – Battery Shipping Methods
International battery shipping is not a one-size-fits-all service. Different types of battery cargo, delivery timelines, budgets, customs requirements, and destination countries all affect the shipping method you should choose.

At our company, we mainly provide four international battery shipping methods:
- Air Freight
- Sea Freight
- Express Delivery
- Special Line Shipping
Each method has its own advantages, requirements, and suitable shipment scenarios. This guide will help you better understand how international lithium battery shipping works and how to choose the right transportation solution for your cargo.
Air Freight for Battery Shipping
Air freight refers to airport-to-airport transportation.
For lithium batteries and battery-powered products, direct flights departing from Mainland China are often subject to strict airline restrictions. In practice, many shipments are not suitable for direct Mainland China air transport.
Because of this, Hong Kong air freight is usually a more flexible and reliable option for battery cargo. In most cases, we arrange shipments through our Shenzhen warehouse and export via Hong Kong Airport.
Minimum Weight Requirements
The minimum chargeable weight for battery air freight is usually:
- 100 kg for most airlines
- Some flights may accept shipments starting from 45 kg
Important Requirements
Air freight is generally suitable for customers who:
- Have customs clearance capability at the destination airport
- Or work with a local customs broker or clearance agent
Typical Air Freight Process
The standard cooperation process for battery air freight is:
- Confirm cargo details, freight rates, suitable flight routes, and schedules
- Coordinate packaging requirements and production timelines with your supplier
- Arrange flight booking
- Your supplier sends the cargo to our Shenzhen warehouse, or we can provide paid pickup service
- We transport the cargo from Shenzhen to Hong Kong for flight handling
- The shipment departs from Hong Kong to your selected destination airport
Battery Packaging Compliance
Battery shipping compliance is extremely important for air transportation.
For lithium batteries and battery-powered products, packaging requirements may involve:
- UN38.3 compliance
- Dangerous goods packaging standards
- Labeling and documentation requirements
- Airline-specific restrictions
We strongly recommend discussing packaging compliance together with your supplier and our logistics team before shipment.
Sea Freight for Battery Shipping
Sea freight refers to port-to-port transportation.
Similar to air freight, many battery shipments — especially LCL cargo — are commonly exported from Hong Kong ports because of operational flexibility and cargo acceptance advantages.
For FCL shipments, Mainland China ports are also available depending on the shipping route and cargo type.
LCL Minimum Charge
For sea freight LCL (Less than Container Load):
- The minimum billing volume is usually 1 CBM
- Shipments smaller than 1 CBM are generally charged as 1 CBM
Customs Clearance at Destination
After the shipment arrives at the destination port:
- The consignee or local customs broker must arrange customs clearance and cargo pickup
- Delays may result in expensive storage or demurrage charges
We strongly recommend arranging customs clearance as early as possible after cargo arrival.

Typical Sea Freight Process
The standard sea freight cooperation process is:
- Confirm cargo information, freight rates, shipping line, sailing schedule, and trade terms
- Coordinate packaging requirements and delivery timelines with your supplier
- Arrange vessel booking
- For LCL shipments, cargo is delivered to our Shenzhen warehouse, or we can arrange paid pickup service
- For FCL shipments, container loading arrangements depend on trade terms such as FOB, CIF, or others
- We arrange container loading and vessel departure
- Cargo sails from Hong Kong or Shenzhen to the destination port
LCL vs FCL for Battery Cargo
Sea freight battery shipping usually includes:
- LCL (Less than Container Load) — suitable for smaller shipments
- FCL (Full Container Load) — suitable for large-volume cargo
Choosing the correct option depends on shipment volume, cost efficiency, and delivery requirements.
Express Delivery for Batteries
International express delivery is usually a door-to-door service without import duties included.
For lithium batteries and battery-powered products, express services are not available in every country due to regulatory restrictions.
Please refer to our Service Scope page for supported destinations.
Our Main Express Channels
For battery express shipping, we mainly use:
- Hong Kong DHL
- Hong Kong FedEx
- Hong Kong UPS
Cargo is usually consolidated through our Shenzhen warehouse before export.

Typical Express Shipping Process
- Confirm cargo information, pricing, and suitable courier channel
- Coordinate packaging requirements and lead time with your supplier
- Your supplier sends cargo to our Shenzhen warehouse, or we can arrange paid pickup service
- We transfer the cargo from Shenzhen to the courier warehouse in Hong Kong
- The shipment is delivered directly to your receiving address
Advantages of Express Delivery
Express shipping is often suitable for:
- Small shipments
- Fast delivery requirements
- E-commerce orders
- Samples and urgent cargo
However, battery acceptance policies vary significantly by country and courier.
Special Line Shipping for Batteries
Special line shipping is a rapidly growing international logistics solution that has become increasingly popular over the past decade.
Different special lines serve different countries and logistics needs.
Some special lines:
- Include customs duties and taxes
- Exclude taxes
- Accept sensitive cargo
- Restrict certain battery products
We have a dedicated Special Line page where you can learn more about available routes and services.
Main Advantages of Special Line Shipping
The biggest advantages are:
- Competitive pricing
- Multiple transit time options
Special line services may include:
- Air Special Line
- Sea Special Line
- Railway Special Line
Each option offers different balances between cost and delivery speed.

The Biggest Challenge: Choosing Reliable Channels
One of the major challenges in special line logistics is selecting reliable and stable shipping channels.
Five years ago, many special line services were unstable and risky. The industry has improved significantly, but unreliable channels still exist today.
For example, there may be hundreds of companies operating China-to-UK special lines. Choosing a safe and cost-effective solution can be extremely difficult for overseas buyers.
Fortunately, our company has:
- More than 10 years of industry experience
- Extensive logistics resources and industry connections
- Long-term cooperation with stable channels
We evaluate risks carefully and inform customers of potential issues in advance.
Typical Special Line Shipping Process
- Confirm cargo details and freight pricing
- Deliver cargo to our Shenzhen warehouse
- Arrange transportation directly to the receiving address
How to Choose the Right Battery Shipping Method
Choosing the right battery shipping method depends on several factors:
| Shipping Method | Best For | Main Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Air Freight | Urgent cargo and large battery shipments | Faster transit |
| Sea Freight | Large-volume cargo | Lower shipping cost |
| Express Delivery | Small parcels and samples | Door-to-door convenience |
| Special Line | E-commerce and flexible logistics needs | Competitive pricing |
Every battery shipment is different.
Factors such as battery type, UN38.3 documentation, packaging, destination country, customs requirements, and delivery timelines all affect the final logistics solution.
